What liposuction is (and is not)

Liposuction removes fat cells from targeted areas to improve body contour. It is not a weight-loss operation and does not treat cellulite or loose skin. The best results are usually in people close to a stable weight who have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Areas commonly treated

• Abdomen and flanks ("love handles")
• Back and bra-line
• Thighs (inner and outer) and knees
• Upper arms
• Chin and neck
• Male chest, as part of gynecomastia surgery

Several areas are often treated in one session, within safe limits set by the surgeon.

Techniques

• Tumescent liposuction: a solution with local anaesthetic and adrenaline is infiltrated first to reduce bleeding and discomfort; this is the basis of most modern liposuction.
• Ultrasound-assisted (e.g. VASER): ultrasound energy loosens fat before removal, sometimes used for fibrous areas or detailed sculpting.
• Power-assisted liposuction: a vibrating cannula helps with dense areas.
• High-definition liposuction: sculpting around muscle contours, for suitable lean patients.

The technique matters less than the surgeon's judgement and experience.

How much can be removed safely

Removing large volumes in one session increases the risk of fluid shifts, bleeding and blood clots. Surgeons set a safe limit based on your weight and health and may stage treatment. Be cautious of offers to treat very large volumes or many areas at once at low prices.

Recovery timeline

• First days: swelling, bruising and fluid drainage from the incisions; a compression garment is worn.
• About 1 week: many people return to light activity and desk work; a check-up is usually done before flying.
• Weeks 2–6: swelling settles gradually; exercise resumes as advised.
• 3–6 months: the final contour becomes visible.

Risks

Possible complications include contour irregularities or dents, asymmetry, numbness, fluid collections (seroma), infection, skin discoloration, and rarer but serious complications such as blood clots in the legs or lungs and fat embolism. The risk rises with larger volumes and combined procedures. Walking early and following your surgeon's advice on compression and clot prevention matter, especially before a long flight.

Travelling to Thailand for liposuction

Plan about 7–10 days, longer after large or combined procedures. Keep moving, stay hydrated and ask your surgeon about clot prevention for the flight home, such as compression stockings.
