What gynecomastia is
Gynecomastia is enlargement of the male breast gland. It is common and can be linked to hormonal changes, weight gain, some medications, anabolic steroids, alcohol and certain medical conditions. Pseudogynecomastia is excess fat without enlarged gland. A doctor should check for treatable causes before surgery.
Techniques
- Liposuction alone for mainly fatty chests.
- Gland excision through a small incision at the lower edge of the areola for firm glandular tissue.
- Combined liposuction and excision, the most common approach.
- Skin removal, sometimes needed after major weight loss or for significant excess skin.
Recovery timeline
- First days: swelling and bruising; a compression vest is worn.
- About 1 week: check-up before flying; desk work often resumes.
- 4–6 weeks: gym and chest exercise resume as advised.
- Months: final contour appears as swelling settles.
Risks
Possible complications include bleeding and haematoma, fluid collection, infection, contour irregularities or a 'saucer' deformity if too much tissue is removed, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation and recurrence if the underlying cause persists.
Travelling to Thailand
Plan about 7–10 days. Wear your compression vest as instructed, including on the flight, and avoid lifting heavy bags.
What affects the cost
Technique, amount of tissue, skin removal, anaesthesia and garments affect the price. See our cost guide.
Choosing a surgeon
Confirm the surgeon's licence with the Medical Council of Thailand and relevant specialist training, ask how many gynecomastia procedures they perform each year, and how complications are handled after you return home. See our checklist.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I stay in Thailand after gynecomastia surgery?
Commonly 7–10 days, until your surgeon has checked healing.
Will gynecomastia come back?
Removed gland tissue does not usually return, but recurrence is possible if the underlying cause, such as steroid use or weight gain, continues.
Is liposuction enough?
For mainly fatty chests, sometimes; firm glandular tissue usually needs to be cut out as well.
When can I go back to the gym?
Usually after 4–6 weeks for chest exercise, as your surgeon advises.
Should I see a doctor first?
Yes. Gynecomastia can have medical causes, including medications and hormonal conditions, which should be checked before surgery.
