Facelift in Thailand

What a facelift does and does not do

A facelift lifts and repositions the tissues of the lower face and jawline and often the neck, and removes excess skin. It does not change the forehead, eyelids or fine surface wrinkles; those are treated with a brow lift, eyelid surgery or skin treatments, which are often combined with a facelift.

Who may consider it

People usually consider a facelift for jowls, loose skin along the jaw and neck bands. Good candidates are in good health, do not smoke (or can stop well before and after surgery) and have realistic expectations. Surgeons assess skin quality, bone structure and health before recommending a technique.

Techniques

• SMAS facelift: tightens the layer of tissue beneath the skin (the SMAS) as well as the skin.
• Deep plane facelift: releases and repositions deeper tissues as one unit; it may address the midface more but is more technically demanding.
• Mini facelift: shorter incisions and a smaller lift for earlier, milder changes.
• Neck lift: often combined, to tighten neck skin and muscle bands.

Preparation

Stopping smoking and nicotine is especially important because smoking raises the risk of skin healing problems. You will be asked about medicines and supplements that affect bleeding, and have pre-operative tests. Plan for help during the first days and bring loose, front-fastening clothing.

Recovery timeline

• Days 1–3: swelling, tightness and bruising; a dressing or compression garment is often used and drains may be placed.
• About 1 week: stitches are removed in stages; many people feel comfortable going out with light make-up after about two weeks.
• Weeks 2–3: most bruising has faded.
• Months: numbness and subtle swelling continue to settle; scars mature over a year.

Risks

The most common significant complication is a haematoma (a collection of blood under the skin), which may need to be drained. Other risks include infection, facial nerve weakness (usually temporary), numbness, visible scarring, hair loss near incisions, skin healing problems (more likely in smokers), asymmetry and dissatisfaction with the result.

Travelling to Thailand for a facelift

Plan to stay 10–14 days so stitches can be removed and early complications checked before you fly. Choose accommodation near the hospital, avoid bending and heavy lifting, and sleep with your head raised. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to travel.

What affects the cost
