What eyelid surgery treats

• Upper blepharoplasty: removes excess upper eyelid skin (hooding) and sometimes fat; it can improve vision when heavy lids block the upper field of view.
• Lower blepharoplasty: reduces or repositions under-eye fat bags and tightens lower lid skin.
• Double eyelid surgery (Asian blepharoplasty): creates or refines an upper eyelid crease, by incision or suture techniques.

Drooping of the lid margin itself (ptosis) is a different problem that needs muscle repair; your surgeon checks for it.

Who may consider it

People consider eyelid surgery for hooded upper lids, puffy lower lids or to create an eyelid crease. You will be asked about dry eyes, glaucoma, thyroid eye disease and vision, because these affect safety. A brow lift is sometimes more appropriate when the brow itself has descended.

Techniques

Upper lid incisions sit in the natural crease. Lower lid surgery may be done through an incision just below the lashes or from inside the lid (transconjunctival), which leaves no visible scar. Double eyelid creases can be created with a full incision or, for suitable lids, a suture (non-incisional) method, which may be less long-lasting.

Recovery timeline

• First 2–3 days: swelling and bruising; cold compresses and head elevation help.
• 5–7 days: stitches removed; most people fly home around this point.
• 1–2 weeks: most bruising fades; many return to work.
• Weeks to months: final crease shape and scars settle; double eyelid creases can look high at first and soften over months.

Risks

Possible complications include dry or irritated eyes, temporary blurred vision, difficulty closing the eyes fully, asymmetry, visible scarring, lower lid malposition (the lid pulling down), infection and, very rarely, bleeding behind the eye affecting vision. Seek urgent help for severe pain or loss of vision after surgery.

Travelling to Thailand for eyelid surgery

Plan about 5–7 days, until stitches are removed. Bring sunglasses, avoid swimming and eye make-up until cleared, and follow your surgeon's advice on eye drops for the flight.
