What a breast lift does
A breast lift removes loose skin and tightens the breast, raising the nipple and areola to a higher position and often reducing the size of stretched areolas. It is usually considered when the nipple sits at or below the fold under the breast, commonly after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or ageing.
Techniques and scars
- Periareolar ("donut"): a scar around the areola, for mild sagging.
- Vertical ("lollipop"): around the areola and down to the fold, for moderate sagging.
- Anchor (inverted-T): adds a scar along the fold, for more significant sagging.
The technique depends on how much lift is needed; more lift generally means longer scars.
Lift with implants (augmentation-mastopexy)
When you want more upper-breast fullness as well as lift, an implant can be placed in the same operation or in stages. Combining them is more complex and has a higher revision rate than either operation alone; ask your surgeon whether they recommend one or two stages for you. See breast augmentation.
Recovery timeline
- First days: soreness, swelling and a supportive surgical bra.
- 1–2 weeks: wound checks and stitch care; most people fly home after about 10–14 days.
- About 2 weeks: return to desk work for many.
- 6 weeks: most exercise and lifting restrictions lifted.
- Months: the breast shape settles and scars fade.
Risks
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, wound healing problems at the junction of scars, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, visible or widened scars, and, rarely, loss of nipple blood supply. Breastfeeding may be affected. Sagging can recur over time with ageing, pregnancy or weight change.
Travelling to Thailand for a breast lift
Plan about 10–14 days. Pack front-opening tops, avoid lifting heavy bags and wear your support bra as instructed, including on the flight.
