What breast augmentation is
Breast augmentation places an implant behind each breast, or transfers fat from another part of the body, to increase volume or improve shape and symmetry. It does not lift sagging breasts on its own; when the nipple sits low, surgeons may recommend a breast lift at the same time or instead.
Who may consider it
People consider augmentation to increase breast size, restore volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or correct asymmetry. Candidates are usually in good general health, have finished breast development and have realistic expectations. A surgeon assesses your chest shape, skin quality and breast tissue before recommending a plan.
Implant choices
- Silicone gel implants are the most common and tend to feel more natural.
- Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water; a rupture is usually obvious as the implant deflates.
- Shape: round or anatomical (teardrop).
- Surface: smooth or textured. Some textured implants are associated with a higher risk of a rare lymphoma (BIA-ALCL); ask which surface your surgeon recommends and why.
Implants are not lifetime devices. Many people need further surgery at some point to replace or remove them.
Incisions and placement
Common incisions are in the fold under the breast (inframammary), around the lower edge of the areola (periareolar) or in the armpit (transaxillary). The implant is placed either in front of the chest muscle (subglandular) or partly behind it (submuscular or dual plane). The best combination depends on your anatomy and the look you want.
Fat transfer as an alternative
Fat transfer uses liposuction to take fat from areas such as the abdomen or thighs and injects it into the breasts. The increase in size is usually modest, part of the transferred fat is reabsorbed, and more than one session may be needed. It avoids an implant but requires enough fat to harvest.
Recovery timeline
- First days: tightness, swelling and discomfort, controlled with pain medication. You will wear a supportive surgical bra.
- About 1 week: many people return to light activity and desk work; your check-up is usually before you fly.
- Weeks 4–6: most restrictions on lifting and exercise are lifted on your surgeon's advice.
- Months: implants settle into their final position over several months.
Risks and long-term considerations
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant), implant rupture, rippling, asymmetry and the need for further surgery. The U.S. FDA also describes BIA-ALCL, a rare lymphoma linked mainly to textured implants, and symptoms some people report and attribute to their implants. The FDA recommends periodic imaging to check silicone implants for silent rupture; ask your surgeon how follow-up works once you are home.
Travelling to Thailand for breast augmentation
Plan to stay about 7–10 days, until your surgeon has checked the wounds. Avoid heavy luggage: arrange help or a transfer service. Bring front-opening tops and ask the hospital for your implant card (brand, size, type and lot numbers); keep it with your medical records.
What affects the cost
The surgeon and hospital, implant type and brand, whether fat transfer or a lift is added, anaesthesia, the number of nights in hospital and pre-operative tests all affect the price. Ask for a written, itemised quote and what happens if a revision is ever needed. See our cost guide.
Choosing a surgeon
Confirm the surgeon's licence with the Medical Council of Thailand and specialist training in plastic surgery. Ask how many augmentations they perform, which implants they use and why, and how complications are handled after you return home. Our checklist walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I stay in Thailand after breast augmentation?
Commonly 7–10 days, so your surgeon can check healing before you fly. Your surgeon confirms the date.
Silicone or saline implants: which is better?
Silicone usually feels more natural; saline deflates visibly if it ruptures. The right choice depends on your anatomy, preferences and your surgeon's advice.
Do breast implants last forever?
No. Implants are not lifetime devices and many people eventually need surgery to replace or remove them.
What is capsular contracture?
A tightening of the scar tissue that naturally forms around an implant. It can make the breast feel firm or look distorted and may need further surgery.
What is BIA-ALCL?
A rare type of lymphoma that can develop in the tissue around breast implants, associated mainly with textured implants. New swelling or a lump near an implant should be checked by a doctor.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Many people can, but surgery can affect breastfeeding in some cases, depending on the incision and placement. Discuss it with your surgeon beforehand.
When can I exercise again?
Light walking starts soon after surgery; strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are usually avoided for about six weeks, or as your surgeon advises.
