How a hair transplant works

Follicles are taken from the donor area, where hair is genetically resistant to balding, and implanted into thinning areas. Because the total number of donor follicles is limited, planning is about using them wisely for a natural hairline and density that will still look right as hair loss progresses.

FUE, DHI and FUT

• FUE (follicular unit extraction): individual follicles are removed with a small punch, leaving tiny dot scars; recipient sites are made and grafts placed.
• DHI (direct hair implantation): a variation where grafts are implanted with a pen-like implanter, often without shaving the recipient area fully.
• FUT (strip technique): a strip of scalp is removed and divided into grafts, leaving a linear scar; it can yield many grafts.

The surgeon's planning and the team's graft handling matter more than the technique name.

Who is a good candidate

Good candidates have enough healthy donor hair and a stable, diagnosed pattern of hair loss. Very young patients with rapidly progressing loss may be advised to wait. Medical treatments such as minoxidil or finasteride may be recommended alongside surgery to protect existing hair; discuss this with a doctor.

Results timeline

• Days 1–10: small scabs and redness; gentle washing as instructed.
• Weeks 2–6: transplanted hairs often shed; this is expected.
• Months 3–4: new growth begins.
• Months 6–9: noticeable improvement.
• Around 12 months: most of the final result, with the crown sometimes taking longer.

Risks

Possible issues include swelling, temporary numbness, infection, folliculitis, visible scarring in the donor area, an unnatural hairline if poorly planned, low graft survival and over-harvesting of the donor area. Choose a clinic where a licensed doctor performs or directly supervises the procedure.

Travelling to Thailand for a hair transplant

Plan 3–5 days: arrival, the procedure day and a check or first wash before flying. Bring a loose hat, avoid heavy exercise and sun on the scalp, and follow washing instructions carefully.

What affects the cost
