Buttock surgery (Buttock augmentation & lift)

Men and women who feel unhappy with the size and shape of their buttocks can have buttock augmentation (implants) or a buttock lift. Most patients have tried exercise and diet, but when that doesn’t have the desired result, buttock surgery can be the solution.

Most people who have had buttock surgery report that they feel more confident, their clothes fit better and feel sexier.

Variations

Buttock augmentation
Buttock augmentation or a butt implant, is the procedure where a solid or semi-solid silicone prosthetic is inserted under the muscles of the buttock. The shape of the implant is usually oval, teardrop or egg-shaped, according to your physique. Since the implant is made of silicone and is not directly below the skin it has the consistency of real buttocks.

Buttock lift
If your buttocks have the size you desire but are sagging you can benefit from a butt lift. This procedure will literally lift your buttocks higher. Some excess skin is removed on top of the butt, lifting the lower parts up to the desired height, giving a more solid appearance and creates a firmer feel.

Note: often these two terms are used interchangeably.

Procedure

The procedure for butt implants starts with an incision between in the crack between the buttocks, where it will be less visible. The butt implants are the placed below the upper muscles of the buttocks, taking special care not to damage any of the nerve endings in the area.

The procedure for a butt lift is different: an incision is made above the butt, stretching from hip to hip. The skin is stretched upwards, pulling the buttocks up. After making sure the buttocks are symmetric. The surgeon will remove excess skin and close the incision with sutures.

Both procedures are usually done when the patient is under general or ‘twilight’ anesthesia.

Recovery after the procedure

The recovery time time is relatively long. The first few days you will wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. Expect to experience discomfort and soreness for the first few weeks. You should not sit directly on the buttocks for the first 3 weeks. Most patients return to work around 2 weeks after the procedure.

Often you will be advised to wear abdominal binders for 6 weeks. Swelling may remain for the first 3 - 4 moths, during this time you are advised to avoid exercise and strenuous activity.

Risks

Like any surgery there are certain risks involved with a buttock surgery, such as:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Implants may shift, leading to an asymmetric result
  • Complications with anesthesia

Who is a candidate for buttock surgery?

Men and women who are at least 18 years of age can have buttock surgery. If you are unhappy with the lack of volume or shape of your buttocks, implants can help. If you have the necessary volume, but experience sagging and/or dimples a butt lift may be for you.

Male-to-female transgendered persons often have buttock implants to make their bum look more feminine.
