Adam’s apple reduction or tracheal shaving is a procedure to reduce the visibility and size of the Adam's apple. Usually, patients are men or women who feel uncomfortable with the size of their Adam's apple, most often male-to-female trans-gendered persons.
Since Thailand has a very high rate of trans-gendered persons, local surgeons are very experienced in this procedure.
Procedure
Usually local anesthetics are given to the patient and the patient does not need to stay overnight. A small slit is made in one of the tiny folds that covers the Adam’s apple, this will ensure that only little visible scarring will remain after the procedure.
The surgeon will then use a scalpel to shave off bits of cartilage. Special care will be placed in not shaving off too much, which could affect the vocal cords. When done, the surgeon will close the wound with sutures. Sometimes steroids will be applied to reduce scarring.
Recovery after the procedure
Healing will take around 2 weeks. Usually the area will feel a bit sore the first few days and the patient may have a bit of a raspy voice. Sometimes massaging the healing wound with Vitamin E oil is recommended by the surgeon. This will reduce scar tissue.
Occasionally, patients report difficulty swallowing or talking during the healing phase. Often, recovering patients find it difficult to reach high notes while singing during this time, as well.
Risks
This procedure is considered very safe. However, do consult a qualified physician before deciding on the procedure. If the shaving goes too deep, permanent voice changes can occur.
Who are candidates for an Adam’s apple shave?
Most commonly male-to-female transgendered persons apply for an Adam’s apple shave. But also men and women who feel uncomfortable about the size of their Adam’s apple choose to undertake the procedure.
Finally, it is not recommended to have an Adam’s apple shaving while still in puberty, since the Adam’s apple hasn’t reached its final size yet. As always, consult a physician at home first, before deciding on a trip to Thailand for any surgery.
